Children with Incarcerated Parents
< back to Resources for Parents list

Unfortunately, there are many children who have one and/or two parents who are incarcerated, which is often quite traumatic. Counseling for these children is extremely vital, and so it is extremely important to connect these children and their parent/guardian to mental health services and/or mentors.

Two programs that specifically target this population are the Seedling Program, and Big Brother/Big Sister's AMACHI Program.

Having a mom or dad in prison can make growing up more difficult. Children with an incarcerated parent often need additional support and guidance. Big Brothers Big Sisters Amachi program helps broaden their perspectives on what they can achieve in life.

Amachi, a Nigerian word of hope from the Ibo people, means "who knows but what God has brought us through this child." Our Amachi Program connects children with role models from all walks of life, but particularly those from local religious organizations. Houses of worship and their members are able to provide a safe, stable environment for children to develop into responsible young men and women.

The Seedling Foundation – Seedling Promise (link to website)

Seedling's Promise is a school-based mentoring program for children whose parents are in prison.

Mentors meet with their students once a week from 30-45 minutes at the child's school, typically during the student's lunch break. Depending on the child's age, a mentor might color with a child, read to the child, create a craft, play basketball, or have a conversation with the child. The choices are limitless, and because of the way that our program is structured, mentors never feel like they're "alone."

Most schools in Austin ISD sponsor some sort of school-based mentor program - managed by the Counselor, Parent Support Specialist or other AISD staff. Mentors support children from pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 and locations are available across Austin.
